:: Obesity

Our body is finely designed to stay in balance in terms of tissue building (anabolism) and tissue breaking down (catabolism). Excess of toxins in the body are forerunners of obesity. If the metabolism does not take place by regular movement of the bowls and other reasons like malfunctioning of the bladder, lungs and the skin, it will lead to toxemia. The second reason is improper digestion and assimilation.

The food that we eat is altered from its original state by heating, boiling, barbecuing, etc. and the body is not biologically adaptable to this alteration. Incomplete digestion and assimilation form a toxic residue in the system. If you accumulate more toxic waste, excess weight follows as a natural sequence.

FAT CAN BE ADDICTIVE
Scientists have discovered that high doses of fat and sugar in fast and processed foods can be as addictive as nicotine – and even drugs. The research found that foods that are high in fat and sugar could cause significant changes in brain biochemistry similar to those from drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Once hooked, the researchers say, many people find it almost impossible to switch back to a healthy diet, often leading to obesity.

Researchers at Rockfeller University in New York have established the addictive nature of fatty foods. They found that regularly eating the products could quickly reconfigure the body’s hormonal system to want yet more fat. They also found that early exposure to fatty food could influence children’s choices so that they would always seek a similar diet, increasing the likelihood of obesity in later life. In another study, Professor Ann Kelly, a neuroscientist, and Mathew Will, of University of Wisconsin, traced the biochemical changes in the brains of rats fed on different diets. Those given a high – fat diet became hooked and displayed symptoms similar to those of a drug addict deprived of their fix if the fat was taken away.

DIARY PRODUCTS

Milk products leave a great deal of toxic mucus in the body. Casein in the milk coagulates in the stomach and form dense substances and put tremendous burden on the body to get rid of them. There is no doubt that milk and milk products are a major factor in obesity. Research shows that many allergies and breathing problems can be directly attributed to diary consumption – in particular asthma. A convenient lifestyle that ensure right metabolic level, regular bowel movement, etc. will go a long way to keeping obesity at bay. This can be achieved by the following methods.

FOOD WITH HIGH WATER CONTENT

Our body has about 70% of water. Replenishing this proportion of water is a must for fitness and survival. Apart from taking a maximum of 8 glasses of water a day, it is essential to consume more food with high water content (like fruits and vegetables) than concentrated foods to restore the natural equation. Water not only transports nutritients to all the cells, but also removes toxic wastes.

PROPER FOOD COMBINATION

Right metabolism depends on proper digestion, which in turn depends on healthy combination of foods. Haphazard and indiscriminate combination of food results in indigestion. Concentrated protein in steak along with starch in baked potato requires a particular digestive and alkaline juice to break them down. When the required neutralization does not take place, the body system is thrown out of balance. More energy is required to break the food, which also takes a long time. This causes fermentation of carbohydrates and putrefied protein, which results in indigestion and discomfort. But a proper food combination creates the right environment for weight loss. Fruit is without doubt the most beneficial and life enhancing food. It should be taken on an empty stomach. If you eat fruit after a meal, the whole meal rots, ferments and turns into acid. Incorrect fruit combination leads to a toxic acid system, which manifests in bloating, excess weight, cellulite gray hair, balding, nervous outbursts and dark circle under the eyes.

DETOXIFICATION

This holds the key to weight loss program. The elimination of toxins from the body takes months or years unless we take steps to speed up the process by proper food habits referred above in the right combination and sequence. Panch karma therapies in Ayurveda are excellent management therapies for detoxification. Common cold, which lasts for an uncommonly long time is merely spewing out the excess toxins, built up and stored in the mucus membrane. When there is more mucus than the tolerable level, elimination of toxin is not as rapid as it should be. When energy provided by the right kind of food and exercise is available, elimination becomes easier and discomfort in the digestive track disappears.

EXERCISE

Aerobics that stimulate the respiratory and circulatory systems cause fresh oxygenated blood reaching all parts of the body. Mini- trampoline on which you can jump is recommended for rebounding, which is a terrific aerobic exercise. A walk in the woods will do wonders for physical well being as well as spiritual and emotional outlook.

OBESITY (Ayurvedic perspective)

The obese have eight handicaps – shortened life, difficulty in movement and sexual intercourse, tiredness, body odor, copious sweating, ravenous hunger and severe thirst. Obesity is the result of surfeit, when the individual gorges on rich, sweet, cold and fatty food; enjoys sleeping during the day, refrains from mental work and suffers from genetic disorders.

As fat accumulates out of proportion to the other tissues in the body, the tissue asymmetry impairs strength and shortens life span and the individual becomes averse to physical activity. Excess fat hampers locomotion and sexual intercourse, which is aggravated by reduction in semen. Body odor is an outcome of the excess accumulation of fat, the association of fat with ‘kapha’, and its diffusion and excess, which markedly increase sweating. As digestive power is strong in these individuals, ‘vata’ is overactive in he stomach and causes intense hunger and thirst. Food is digested quickly and triggers the urge to eat more – if the desire is not met, the person suffers from several ills as a consequence.

The aim of treatment is to restore the balance in the proportion of muscles among tissues because the resultant firmness protects organs from disorders. The slimming or reducing measures involves an austere regimen that covers diet, medications and a wide range of activities. Panchakarma (five evacuative therapies) are employed to restore the balance of the unsettled ‘dosas’ – by detoxifying and purifying the body.
